Minutes from December 2014 Core Group Meeting

Present: Kim Smith, Rich Williams, Erin Baird, Joe Barker, Trish Barker, Barry Berger via Skype

  1. Kim called the meeting to order at 6pm
  2. Membership report – Rich reported 106 members
  3. Volunteer Needs:
    1. Newsletter researchers – Joe agreed to research events in central county for the newsletter. Kim
    2. Newsletter proof-reader – Courtnie
    3. Publicists/Promoters – Rich will send out PDFs for volunteers to print and post or forward via email. Kim would like to send flyers out to those willing to post them at Health Food stores, Physician offices, Health First, Restaurants, Community bulletin boards, etc. We need to generate a mailing list for those who want them (Idea – can we make a link on Meetup where people can go download a flyer?) We also need to be sure our events get listed in Florida Today and Hometown News
    4. Chamber events – During discussion of the need for volunteers, the group decided to focus resources on our two main events for this year – the 20th Birthday celebration and VegFest. HPOB will not renew Chamber membership this year and will not participate in Fiesta Brevard
    5. Titusville Chili Cook-off – This is 2/28. We need a minimum of 8 gallons of Chili. Erin will make a batch So will Jackie. Trish agreed to cook a batch either her own or the HPOB official entry
  4. Dining Out – January Dining out will be a casual dinner and a movie at the food court in Merritt Island Mall on 1/10/15
  5. Pot luck – The pot lucks have been changed to the third Saturday of the month The location is still Appleseeds
  6. Outreach Report – Kim reviewed upcoming events:
    1. 1/9 Sam’s club Mingle
    2. 1/10 CBL Forks over knives Erin will host
    3. 1/15 core group
    4. 1/24 Will Tuttle presentation – Trish volunteered FEA lobby
    5. 1/25 Family Picnic – McClarty Park Rockledge
    6. 1/28 CBL food prep or a movie
    7. 2/7 CBL Peaceable Kingdom – Courtnie will host
    8. 2/11 Food prep –
    9. 2/21 Prepare Lunch at Sharing Center
    10. 2/21 Speaker?
    11. 2/25 Food prep – vegan chili –
    12. 2/28 Titusville Rotary Chili Cook-off

  7. Sharing Center – Kim is preparing lunch for about 100 at the Sharing Center on 1/31*. They have expressed interest in classes on healthy eating and preparing vegetable dishes – Need date

  1. Finance – HPOB obtained a $4000 grant which will be used toward establishment of VegFest in the Fall
  2. New Business –
    1. Kim has offered her office on Parnell Street to establish a community Garden for the group.
    2. 20th anniversary of HPOB – Group decided to link our 20th to Sunseed’s earth day celebration. Possibly 4/18? Kim will confirm dates
    3. VegFest – We need to get commitments from volunteers and set up committees to handle all the areas involved – Food and Beverage, Parking, Tickets, Bathrooms & Trash, Advertising & PR, Sponsorships, Vendors, Security, Children’s activities, Music & Entertainment, etc. Since it’s in October we may have a veggie Halloween contest.
